SCOLA is a non-profit educational organization that receives and re-transmits television programming from around the world in native languages. These programs are available free to the KU community via the Internet to support the learning of foreign languages and engagement with global issues. The service provides 24 hour programming on five channels, including separate channels for Europe, Latin America, The People's Republic of China, Central and Eastern Asia, as well as Africa and the Middle East. Files are fully-downloadable and available on a six-day rolling archive. SCOLA also provides a limited number of Insta-Lessons, which consist of a video and audio clip of a segment of native language news broadcasts that have been transcribed and translated. For more information on this service, or suggestions on integrating SCOLA into your curriculum, please contact EGARC at egarc@ku.edu. |
The EGARC Digital Library consists primarily of digitized versions of the audio and video supplements to foreign language textbooks. You will need a KU online ID to access these portions of the library. You will also find links to webpages with content related to course assignments. In some cases the websites require the user to set up an account, but all of the sites are open to the public and are available at no charge. Links to the digital library are provided on the left.
All of the audio files in the EGARC Digital Library are in mp3 format and should play in most media players, including Windows Media Player (which comes standard with Windows) and QuickTime (which comes standard with Macintosh). All of the video files in the EGARC Digital Library and on SCOLA are available in .mp4 format, which will play in both QuickTime (which comes standard with Macintosh) and Windows Media Player (which comes standard with Windows). Those using Windows Media Player will need to download software from 3ivx's Windows Codec Website to play the .mp4 files.
